Why exercise is important for your mental health

It’s a well-known fact that exercise is good for you. But, why exactly is it good for mental health?

During the challenging Melbourne lockdowns in 2020 -2021, there were many cited benefits of doing exercise to stay positive and manage the mental load of being stuck at home. Whether it was a run around the block, a home workout or a walk outside, everyone was encouraged to exercise. I’m sure if you experienced lockdowns (for any duration) you could relate to that positive feeling of moving your body!

Although every body is different, at a fundamental level exercise can support a healthy mental state for many reasons, including:

Releases Endorphins: It helps release endorphins, the chemicals that improve your mood and reduce stress levels.

Reduces Stress: It can reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body, leading to reduced stress and anxiety levels.

Improves Sleep: It can improve the quality of your sleep, helping you to feel more rested and better able to handle stress.

Boosts Self-Esteem: It can improve self-esteem and confidence, which can lead to a more positive outlook on life.

Provides Social Support: Group fitness classes like Pilates or working out with a partner can provide social support, helping you to feel connected and less isolated. It’s a great way to join a group of like-minded people, like our amazing community at Feel Good Pilates!

Increases Brain Function: Exercise has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, leading to improved cognitive function and memory.

Overall, exercise can have a positive impact on your mental health as it can improve your mood, reduce your stress levels, and provide a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. This can be particularly helpful when you are starting out on your exercise journey, to give you the motivation to keep going!

By incorporating regular physical activity into your routine, you can create a holistic approach to maintaining good mental health and good physical health too!
